If 1/48 is "the manly scale" Daniele's efforts are Herculean

Since first appearing in the late fifties the big 1/28 scale WWI kits have been firm favourites with WWI modellers. There can't be many who haven't built at least one, and most of us harbour a secret plan to do a number on one or other of them "one of these days". Daniele Silvestri has been there, done that, and bought the tee shirt with this conversion of the basic kit to a Sopwith 2F1 Ships Camel. Daniele's model depicts N6812, which still exists and hangs from the ceiling of the Imperial War Museum in Lambeth south London. It was on this machine that Lt S.D. Culley engaged and destroyed the German Naval Airship L53 in July of 1918.

These pictures can only offer a hint of the quality and detail incorporated into the model, much of it never to be seen again once assembly was complete. Some inkling may be gathered from the Bentley Rotary seen elsewhere in these pages. Interior details not shown here include a particularly impressive wicker seat, but I'm afraid you'll just have to take my word for it.

All together the project demonstrates a dedication and application far above and beyond the call of duty, and Danieles photography is better than mine too. Enjoy and admire.
